Best Things to Do in Saint Lucia: Our Local Guide to Activities & Experiences
One of the best things about staying in Saint Lucia is the sheer variety of experiences packed into a relatively small island.
You can hike a volcanic peak in the morning, swim beneath a waterfall in the afternoon and be back at your villa for dinner. Spend another day sailing along the Caribbean coast, another playing golf overlooking the Atlantic, and another doing very little beyond finding a beautiful beach and ordering lunch.
As residents of Cap Estate, we're regularly asked by guests at Champagne du Cap what they should do during their stay. The answer depends enormously on the group.
Some guests want adventure every day. Others come to Saint Lucia primarily to relax. Families often want a mixture of both, while groups of friends might combine a boat day, golf, restaurants and a few days around the villa.
So rather than trying to fit everything into your holiday, these are the Saint Lucia experiences we think are most worth considering.
1. Take a Private Boat Trip to Soufrière and the Pitons
If you only choose one major excursion during your holiday, we'd seriously consider making it a boat trip down Saint Lucia's west coast.
The journey itself is part of the experience. Travelling south from the north of the island takes you past bays, fishing villages and dramatic stretches of coastline before eventually reaching Saint Lucia's famous Pitons.
Many private charters can tailor the day to your group, with opportunities for swimming and snorkelling along the way and stops around Soufrière.
Depending on your itinerary, a day on the water can also be combined with some of the attractions around Soufrière, including the Sulphur Springs, mud baths and waterfalls.
For families or groups staying at Champagne du Cap, a private charter is particularly enjoyable because you have the boat to yourselves and can set the pace of the day rather than following a fixed group excursion.
Best for: families, groups of friends, couples and first-time visitors.
Allow: most of the day.
Our tip: don't try to cram too much into the itinerary. A leisurely boat trip with swimming, lunch and a couple of stops is often more enjoyable than trying to tick off every attraction in Soufrière.
2. Visit the Sulphur Springs and Mud Baths
Saint Lucia's volcanic landscape is one of the things that makes the island so unusual.
Near Soufrière you'll find Sulphur Springs, commonly described as the Caribbean's only drive-in volcano. The geothermal area includes steaming pools and bubbling springs, while the nearby mud baths have become one of Saint Lucia's most recognisable visitor experiences.
Cover yourself in warm volcanic mud, wash off in the mineral-rich water and accept that somebody in your group will inevitably take far too many photographs.
It's touristy, certainly, but it's also great fun.
This is easily combined with waterfalls, lunch and other attractions around Soufrière and is particularly convenient as part of a full-day excursion from Cap Estate.
Best for: first-time visitors, couples, families and groups.

3. Climb Gros Piton
For something considerably more energetic, hike Gros Piton.
The Pitons are Saint Lucia's defining landmarks, and climbing one provides a very different perspective on the island.
Gros Piton is the peak generally climbed by visitors. It's a proper hike rather than a casual stroll, so we'd recommend sensible footwear, plenty of water and an early start before the hottest part of the day.
The reward is extraordinary scenery and the satisfaction of having climbed one of the Caribbean's most famous landmarks.
Bear in mind that travelling from Cap Estate to the south of Saint Lucia takes time. Once you combine the drive, the hike and stops for food or sightseeing, Gros Piton should generally be treated as a full-day excursion.
Best for: active adults, teenagers and hiking enthusiasts.
Allow: a full day from Cap Estate.
4. Explore Pigeon Island National Landmark
For something much closer to Champagne du Cap, head to Pigeon Island.
Located at the northern end of Rodney Bay, Pigeon Island combines beaches, walking trails, historical ruins and fantastic views.
The former military lookout provides a glimpse into Saint Lucia's colonial history, but for many visitors the highlight is simply walking to the viewpoints overlooking Rodney Bay and the Caribbean Sea.
It's an excellent half-day activity and one of our favourite recommendations for guests who want to explore without spending hours in a car.
You can walk, explore the ruins, swim and have lunch nearby before heading back to the villa.
Best for: almost everyone.
Allow: 2-4 hours.
5. Play Golf at Cabot Saint Lucia
Golfers staying at Champagne du Cap have one of the Caribbean's most spectacular courses almost on their doorstep.
Point Hardy Golf Club at Cabot Saint Lucia occupies a dramatic peninsula at the northern tip of the island, with holes running alongside cliffs above the Atlantic Ocean.
Even among well-travelled golfers, it has quickly developed a reputation as an extraordinary place to play.
Champagne du Cap is particularly well positioned for golf groups because Cabot is located here in Cap Estate, making it possible to combine serious golf with the privacy and space of a large villa.
If golf is one of the main reasons for your trip, read our separate guide to staying near Cabot Saint Lucia.
Best for: golfers and golf groups.

6. Go Snorkelling or Scuba Diving
Much of Saint Lucia's best underwater scenery is found along its Caribbean-facing west coast.
The island's volcanic geography continues beneath the water, creating reefs, walls and interesting marine environments populated by colourful tropical fish.
Beginners can join guided snorkelling trips, while certified divers will find numerous dive sites around the island.
Snorkelling can also easily be incorporated into a private boat charter, which is often the easiest option for larger groups.
Best for: couples, families, teenagers and divers.
7. Try Rainforest Ziplining or the Aerial Tram
Saint Lucia's interior is very different from its beaches.
Head into the rainforest and the landscape becomes cooler, greener and considerably wilder.
One of the easiest ways to experience it is through an aerial tram or zipline excursion.
The aerial tram offers a more relaxed journey through the forest canopy, while ziplining adds considerably more adrenaline.
Some operators combine the two, making this a good option for groups where some people want adventure and others would prefer something gentler.
Best for: families, groups and adventurous travellers.
8. Chase Waterfalls
Saint Lucia has numerous waterfalls hidden amongst its rainforest and volcanic landscape.
Some require hiking; others are easily accessible and can be incorporated into a wider island tour.
Around Soufrière, waterfalls are commonly combined with the mud baths and volcano, making it possible to experience several of Saint Lucia's natural attractions in one day.
Standing beneath a cool rainforest waterfall after visiting the warm volcanic mud baths is particularly refreshing.
Best for: everyone.

9. Go Deep-Sea Fishing
Saint Lucia's deep water is relatively close to shore, making the island a popular destination for sport fishing.
Depending on the season and conditions, fishing charters may target species including mahi-mahi, wahoo, tuna and billfish.
Private charters can normally accommodate both experienced anglers and complete beginners.
Best for: fishing enthusiasts and groups looking for something different.
10. Experience Gros Islet Friday Night Street Party
If you're staying with us over a Friday, Gros Islet's famous street party is practically on our doorstep.
Every Friday evening, the centre of Gros Islet fills with music, food stalls, bars, locals and visitors.
Expect grilled fish and chicken, Caribbean food, rum, cold Piton beers and plenty of music.
It's not a polished tourist attraction - and that's precisely why people enjoy it.
Champagne du Cap is located in Cap Estate immediately north of Gros Islet, making this one of the easiest evening experiences for our guests.
We recommend arranging a driver rather than worrying about parking or driving afterwards.
Best for: adults, groups of friends and anyone wanting to experience local nightlife.
11. Spend a Day at the Beach
Not every day needs an itinerary.
Saint Lucia has beaches ranging from lively stretches with restaurants and watersports to much quieter coves.
In the north, Reduit Beach provides a long stretch of sand alongside Rodney Bay and is convenient for restaurants and watersports.
Pigeon Island also has attractive swimming spots, while numerous other beaches can be discovered as you travel around the island.
For something different, head towards the Atlantic side and experience Saint Lucia's wilder coastline.
Sometimes the best plan is simply to pick a beach, take a book and do very little.
Best for: absolutely everyone.
12. Try Kayaking or Paddleboarding
If you'd rather be on the water than lying beside it, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding provide an easy way to explore Saint Lucia's coastline.
They're considerably less demanding than a full-day excursion and work particularly well as a morning activity before lunch or an afternoon back at the villa.
Guided kayaking excursions are also available in different parts of the island for visitors wanting to explore mangroves and quieter coastal areas.
Best for: active families, couples and teenagers.
13. Go Whale and Dolphin Watching
Saint Lucia's surrounding waters are home to several species of dolphins and whales.
Dedicated wildlife trips head offshore looking for marine life, while dolphins are sometimes encountered unexpectedly during other boat excursions.
As with any wildlife experience, sightings can never be guaranteed –- which is part of what makes encountering them special.
Best for: families, wildlife enthusiasts and photographers.
14. Visit Project Chocolat
Saint Lucia has a long history of cacao production, and one of the most interesting ways to explore it is through a chocolate-making experience.
At Project Chocolat near Soufrière, visitors can learn how cacao travels from tree to finished chocolate and participate in hands-on chocolate making.
It's particularly good for families and anyone looking for an experience beyond beaches and sightseeing.
It also combines easily with other attractions in the south.
Best for: families, food lovers and chocolate lovers.
15. Explore Saint Lucia by ATV or Buggy
For guests who prefer engines to hiking boots, ATV and buggy tours provide another way to explore the island.
Routes vary but can include plantations, trails, viewpoints and parts of Saint Lucia you might otherwise never see.
Expect dust or mud depending on the weather - this isn't generally the day for your best white clothes.
Best for: couples, groups and families with older children.
16. Visit a Rum Distillery
Rum and Caribbean history are inseparable.
A distillery tour provides an introduction to how Saint Lucian rum is produced and, importantly, usually includes the opportunity to taste it.
It's a relatively easy excursion and can be combined with other sightseeing rather than taking up an entire day.
Best for: adults and rum enthusiasts.
17. Take a Helicopter Tour
If you want to appreciate Saint Lucia's geography, seeing the island from above is difficult to beat.
Helicopter tours reveal just how mountainous and green Saint Lucia really is, with the rainforest-covered interior, Atlantic and Caribbean coastlines and Pitons all visible from the air.
Helicopter transfers can also turn the journey between Hewanorra International Airport in the south and the north of the island into an experience in itself.
Best for: special occasions and guests short on time.
18. Have a Private Chef Dinner at the Villa
One of the advantages of renting a private villa is that going out isn't your only option.
A private chef can prepare dinner at Champagne du Cap while your group enjoys the pool, gardens and outdoor areas.
For families and larger groups in particular, it can be considerably more relaxing than organising transport and getting everybody to a restaurant at the same time.
It's also an excellent option for birthdays, anniversaries or simply your final evening in Saint Lucia.
Best for: families, groups and celebrations.
19. Enjoy a Beach Picnic
For something simple but memorable, arrange a picnic and spend a few hours at one of the island's beaches.
Champagne du Cap can also arrange a prepared beach picnic for guests, making this an easy option for days when you don't want a formal excursion.
It's particularly good between larger activity days when everyone wants a slower pace.
Best for: couples, families and groups.

20. Explore Rodney Bay
Rodney Bay is the main entertainment and dining centre in northern Saint Lucia and is just a short drive from Cap Estate.
You'll find restaurants, bars, shops, supermarkets, Reduit Beach and Rodney Bay Marina concentrated within a relatively small area.
For guests staying at Champagne du Cap, it's useful to have all of this nearby without actually having to stay in the middle of it.
Spend the afternoon at Reduit Beach, have dinner in Rodney Bay and return to the peace and privacy of Cap Estate afterwards.
21. Explore the Island by Car
Renting a car gives you the freedom to explore Saint Lucia at your own pace.
Just remember that distances can be deceptive.
Saint Lucia is only around 27 miles long, but mountainous roads mean journeys often take considerably longer than the distance suggests.
For guests who don't want to drive, we can recommend trusted local drivers for airport transfers, restaurants and day trips.
For longer sightseeing days - particularly Soufrière and the Pitons - having a driver can make the experience much more relaxing.
22. Do Absolutely Nothing
This one deserves to be on the list.
It can be tempting to fill every day of a Caribbean holiday with excursions, but you don't need to.
Champagne du Cap has a large private swimming pool, landscaped tropical gardens, hammocks, outdoor living and dining areas, games room, fitness studio and yoga space.
Some of our guests' favourite days are the ones when nobody leaves the villa.
Have breakfast outside. Swim. Read. Put lunch on the BBQ. Play pool. Take an afternoon nap. Open a bottle of wine and stay outside until long after sunset.
You're on holiday.

Planning Activities During Your Stay at Champagne du Cap
We don't believe a great Saint Lucia holiday needs to be organised minute by minute.
Our recommendation is to choose two or three experiences that really matter to your group, book those in advance and leave some flexibility around them.
Weather, energy levels and the temptation to spend another afternoon beside the pool have a habit of changing plans.
We're also happy to share recommendations with our guests for trusted local drivers, boat trips, private chefs and other experiences we've come to know.
Because Champagne du Cap is our home as well as a luxury vacation rental, our recommendations aren't based on trying to sell you as many excursions as possible.
They're simply the things we'd recommend to friends and family visiting Saint Lucia.
And sometimes our recommendation really will be:
Stay home today. Open the champagne. Enjoy the pool.
